I love old Indy 500 entry lists.
By 1996, with CART and the IRL headed in two different directions with separate 500-mile events on May 26, the era of unified open-wheel racing had been lost. Both sides came together in 2008 when Champ Car failed to answer the bell, and we’ve been fortunate to have a single IndyCar Series to focus on since then.
It makes that final Indy 500 entry list from 1995, with manyĀ stars and cars of the era–not to mention some soon-to-beĀ luminaries of theĀ IRL–so fascinating to review. The car counts, the teams, the chassis, tire, and engine packages. It represents everything I hope to see at the Speedway in the near future.
